Abstract

1,204,335. Automatic control of rolling. DAVY & UNITED ENG. CO. Ltd. Nov.21, 1968 [Nov.21, 1967], No.52853/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Division B3] Electrical signals corresponding to the rolling load of a rolling mill and the thickness of material entering the rolls are utilized to derive a signal, predominantly responsive to thickness variations due to eccentricity and/or ovality of the rolls, which is applied to adjust the roll gap to reduce such variations. As shown, strip material from an uncoiler 11 passes between mill rolls 1, 2 to a coiler 12 and output thickness is automatically regulated by electrical signals from an output thickness gauge 18 and a load cell 7 responsive to the rolling load, which are combined in a unit 14 to control both a hydraulic unit 9 determining the load applied to the rolls and a motor 13 determining the back tension applied to the material. Signals from an input thickness gauge 19, suitably delayed at 20, correspond to input thickness variations at rolls 1, 2 and signals from the load cell 7 also correspond to these variations and to other causes such as eccentricity and/or ovality of the rolls. By comparing these signals at 21, their ratio is obtained for the component of the load signal which corresponds to input thickness variations. This latter component is then obtained by suitable multiplication at 21<SP>1</SP> and subtracted from the load variations at 23. The variations due to eccentricity and/or ovality are then selected from the remaining variations by rate follow-up servo-systems 24 adjusting potentiometers supplied with sine and cosine signals from a generator driven by a backup roll 3, so that signals of a suitable phase are applied through an amplifier 25 to control hydraulic unit 9 and thereby reduce the effects of eccentricity and/or ovality by adjustment of the rolling load. Servo-adjusted potentiometers supplied from a sine-cosine generator deiven by the other back-up roll 4 may apply further signals to amplifier 25. A similar control system may be arraged for each stand of a multi-stand rolling mill, the signals from the load cells associated with each stand being suitably delayed to provide indications of input thickness at the next stand without the need for thickness measurements between stands.
