[Also in Divisions C4 and C5] Cyclodisilazane derivatives of the formula in which R is H, F, a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic group or a silyl group -SiR<SP>1</SP> 3 , -SiR <SP>1</SP> 2 -SiR<SP>1</SP> 3 , -Si(Si- R<SP>1</SP> 3 ) 2 R or -Si(SiR<SP>1</SP> 3 ) 3 in which R<SP>1</SP> is H, F, a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic group, or two groups R form a heterocyclic group with a silicon atom to which they are both attached, X is Cl, Br or I, and n is at least 2, at least one R group on each Si atom and at least one R<SP>1</SP> group on each Si atom being an organic group linked by Si-C bonds are prepared by heating a cyclic silazane (R 2 SiNH) a , where a is 3 or 4, with a dihalosilane R 2 SiX 2 , at a temperature of from 280‹ to 350‹ C. The mol ratio of silazane to dihalosilane is preferably 1: 1 to 1: 2. A catalyst, e.g. a Lewis acid, may be employed. The products also include compounds wherein n is 1. The terminal halogen atoms may be exchanged for organic or organometallic groups or fluorine atoms to form products suitable as heat-transfer agents or lubricants.
