Abstract

1,203,461. Laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 13249/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A laminated article comprises a layer of plastics foam bonded to one or two sheets of facing material, at least one sheet of facing material being coated on the surface adjacent to the foam layer with a fire-retardant composition which swells and blisters on exposure to a flame. Specified plastics are rubber, ebonite, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, silicones, epoxy resins, phenol-formaldehyde condensates, ureaformaldehyde condensates, polyamides, polymerized cyclic ethers, polyurethanes and polyisocyanurates. Specified facing materials are asbestos board, asbestos/cement board, plasterboard, wood, glass-reinforced resin and metals, e.g. iron, steel and aluminium. The fire-retardant composition preferably contains an organic compound which chars to form a carbonaceous residue, a compound which thermally decomposes evolving gas and one or more polymeric film-forming substances, the exemplified composition being based on chlorinated rubber, polychloroprene, chlorinated hydrocarbons and tricresyl phosphate. The foam layer may be adhesively bonded to the facing material or formed in situ on one or between both facing sheets. The example describes the preparation of a laminate comprising outer layers of asbestos board, a core of polyurethane formed in situ and edging strips of teak.
