Abstract

1,203,233. Tubular heat exchangers. XFLO HEAT EXCHANGERS Ltd. and G. W. DANIELS. 1 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 46333/67. Heading F4S. In a shell and tube type heat exchanger a tortuous path for a heat exchange fluid flowing through the shell 5 over the tubes 10 is provided by an arrangement comprising spaced transverse separation plates 11, 12 together with interposed strip-shaped baffle members 15, 16. Each plate 11 has a central circular aperture 13 and each plate 12 a circumferential aperture 14. The generally similar baffle members 15, 16 are so shaped to define substantially spiral flow paths between each successive pairs of separation plates for the heat exchange fluid flowing over the tubes. In a modification (Fig. 6A) each plate 11 is formed with a semicircular central aperture (21), the remainder of the central region accommodating additional tubes; conversely each baffle plate 12 is formed with a circumferential aperture (22), Fig. 6B which is substantially free of tubes. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) each transverse separation plate (18) is formed with an opening (19) at its circumference for the passage of fluid flowing over the tubes, adjacent such plates having their openings angularly disposed relative to each other. A plurality of plane baffle members (20) extend perpendicularly between adjacent separation plates (18) and are positioned in staggered relationship to define a zig-zag flow path for the fluid flowing over the tubes. To facilitate assembly of the heat exchanger the shell may be formed in two flanged semicylindrical halves (23, 24, Figs. 7A, 7B, 8) welded together.
