Abstract
1,203,191. Flexible shafts; Bowden mechanisms. V.D.O. TACHOMETER WERKE, ADOLF SCHINDLING G.m.b.H. 23 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 3921/69. Headings F2K and F2U. For silent actuation of a flexible shaft operating with rotary or linear movement in a protective guide tube, either or both of the contacting cylindrical surfaces are provided wiyh brush-like filaments of abrasion resistant material. The shaft shown in Fig. 1 is formed with outer triple helix wires 1, a fibre-covered yarn 2 being wound helically in the joint gap between the turns of wire, while the guide tube shown in Fig. 2 has the inner surface formed by helical turns of profiled wire 5 with the yarn 2 secured between the turns. As shown, the yarn is held in place by adhesive, but it may be secured in the nip between abutting turns of wire, Fig. 3 (not shown). The yarn may be of chenille type with a twisted filament core, the fibres being of plastics material, or the fibres may be deposited on an adhesive core by electrostatic flocking.
