Abstract

1,203,006. Citric acid. CHAS. PFIZER & CO. Inc. 26 Sept., 1968 [12 June, 1968], No. 45856/68. Heading C2C. Citric acid is prepared by fermentation of a nutrient medium comprising at least 3% by weight n-alkane or 1-alkene hydrocarbon (9- 19 C) mixed with an aqueous phase containing a source of assimilable nitrogen and minerals by aerobic propagation of a citric and producing member of Genus Candida. The pH of the medium is maintained above 4 and the citric acid produced separated if necessary as the salt. n-Hexadecane is preferred as the hydrocarbon but others are used in the examples. Examples describe the use of Candida lipolytica, ATCC 8661, using many hydrocarbons.
