Abstract

1,202,889. Piston rings. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 30 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 54622/67. Heading F2T. The top piston ring of an internal combustion engine piston 1 comprises a split ring 3 with a gas-tight joint and having on its upper side a radially outwardly facing shoulder 12 engaged by a corresponding shoulder 12a of a further split or divided ring 5, the rings 3 and 5 breaking joint and having substantially the same outer diameter whereby, in operation their outer faces 9 and 9a both engage the cylinder wall 8. The joint in the ring 3 is formed by a segmental section end 10 engaging a corresponding recess 11 in the other end, the ring 5 having a single radial slit 20, or being divided into three parts separated by radial slits (41, Fig. 6). Relative rotation between the rings 3 and 5 is prevented by a pin 21 or pins on one engaging a bore 22 or bores in the other. The mutually engaging surfaces 12, 12a; 13, 13a and 14, 14a of the rings may be coated with chromium or copper.
