Abstract

1,202,839. Phenolic compounds bearing methyleneiminodiacetonitrile groups. W. R. GRACE & CO. 19 May, 1969 [13 June. 1968], No. 26589/69. Heading C2C. The invention comprises monohydric phenols and a- and #-naphthols having a substituent group bonded to a ring carbon atom of the phenol or naphthol which in the case of a phenol is a C atom ortho or para to the phenolic OH group, and in the case of an a- or #-naphthol, the #- or α-C atom respectively. They may be obtained by heating a monohydric phenol or α- or #- naphthol having a H atom attached to the C atom to which the substituent group is to be bonded, in an inert liquid medium under substantially anhydrous conditions, at a temperature of 60-200‹ C. in the presence of a substantially non-oxidizing strong acid with methylenebisiminodiacetonitrile until the product is obtained as such or in the form of a salt with the acid, separating the product from the inert liquid medium, if the product is in salt form neutralizing it with a weak base having a decomposable anion and isolating the product. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. Also, monohydric phenols or α- or #-naphthols, having a substituent group bonded to a ring carbon atom of the phenol or naphthol which, in the case of a phenol, is a C atom ortho or para to the phenolic OH group, and in the case of an α- or #-naphthol, the #- or α-carbon atom respectively, or a salt thereof, are obtained by hydrolysing a compound of the invention above in the presence of an acid or of an inorganic base respectively. An example is given which illustrates this process;
