Abstract
1,202,357. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 4 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966; 9 Dec., 1966; 14 Feb., 1967], Nos. 40366/66, 55212/66 and 6894/67. Heading A3B. [Also in Division B5] A method of coating a piece of sheet material e.g. a shoe upper lining 62, with a heat-softenable adhesive composition which is non-tacky at room temperature includes the steps of placing the piece 62 between a carrier layer 60 and a layer 64 of adhesive, applying heat and pressure to bond the adhesive layer 64 to the piece 62 and to the area of the carrier layer 60 surrounding the piece 62, and subsequently separating the coated piece 62 and carrier layer 60 leaving”the surplus adhesive on the carrier layer 60. The carrier layer 60 may be low grade paper e.g. newsprint and the adhesive may be an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) the newsprint 60, pieces 62 and adhesive layer 64 are assembled on a heated table 14 and are lightly bonded locally by thumb pressure. The assembled layers are then passed between a resilient roller 18 and a steel roller 20 which is heated by a block 40, to bond the layers together and are stacked on a shelf 52. When the pieces 62 are required the assembly is placed on a heated table (not shown) and the pieces 62 are removed from the carrier layer 60. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3) the adhesive layer is supported on a backing layer 193 coated with a release agent. The pieces 62 are placed on the coated layer 193 above a heated table 114 and then pass under a roll 216 where a carrier layer 210 is added. The layers then pass between rollers 118, 120 which bond the layers together and the carrier layer 210 with the surplus adhesive passes to a take-up roll 212. The layer 193 and the coated pieces then pass between tensioning rolls 174, 182 and over a heated table 115 where the coated pieces 62 are removed, the layer 193 being wound once a take up reel 196. A third embodiment (not shown) is similar to the second embodiment but includes an additional roller which bonds the layers together lightly before they pass between the rollers 118, 120, and a scraper blade which cuts any adhesive which strings between the pieces and the carrier layer 210.
