Abstract
1,202,335. Pipe stoppers; pipe joints; valves. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 1 July, 1968 [18 July, 1967; 21 March. 1968], No. 31302/68. Headings F2G, F2P and F2V. An obturator forming a connection between pipes 1a, 1b comprises a stationary circular seating 12b integral with the pipe 1a, a sleeve 15 integral with the pipe 1b and a movable seating 12a of the same diameter as the seating 12b and coaxial therewith. A shutter 10 is adapted to move into position between the seatings at right angles to the common axis thereof, and the obturator is contained in a casing 26. The seating 12a is slidable along the sleeve and has a flared extension 5 welded to one end of a bellows seal 14, the other end of which is welded to the sleeve 15, the extension being applied on one side thereof against springs 41 one extremity of each of which is fixed to the casing, and on the other side thereof, against hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 2 which when pressurized act to displace the seating 12a away from the seating 12b to allow the shutter to move perpendicularly to the seatings. As shown in Fig. 1, the tube 1a extends into a casing impervious to the surrounding atmosphere and formed by end walls 13, 27 and a shell 26 and, has welded thereto, a metallic diaphragm 9. A cutting punch 6 is provided in conjunction with the seating 12a. The shutter 10 is guided by slides 23, 24 and a rocker arm support which actuates the shutter. With the shutter in the open position, the jacks 2 are pressurized to move seating 12a away from seating 12b whereby the punch 6 cuts the diaphragm 9 to open a sampling system, and electric current is applied to a fuse wire which melts to free the shutter so that tension springs draws the shutter between the seatings, the pressure in the jacks being then reduced to zero and the springs 4 thrusting the seating 12a against the shutter and the latter against the seating 12b. In modifications, (a) the shutter is pivoted to move transversely to the axis of the seatings, (b) the positions of the jacks 2, Fig. 8, and springs 4 are reversed, the shutter 10 being normally closed and carried on a support 11 pivoted on a pin 30 fixed to the movable seating, and a lever 32 coupled to a fixed bracket 52 is connected to a rod 40 so that when the jacks 2 are pressurized the lever 32 in pivoting about pin 34 causes the end 39 of rod 40 to contact the member 37 whereby the support pivots about pin 30 and moves the shutter to the open position thereof; the seating 12a is guided by a ring 53 and annular bearing 54, and (c) the support 11 is provided with a catch which coacts with a hook when the shutter is open.
