Flowmeter calibration apparatus includes a valve 15 through which a sphere (not shown) is passed at the end of its travel in a loop (not shown) of the calibration apparatus to return the sphere to the start of the loop, the valve being positioned in a passage 17 connecting the ends of the loop and having spaced sealing rings 30, 31 which are compressed when the valve is closed. A vent 32 is provided for detecting leakage of fluid, such as liquid fuel, through the valve. The fluid flows in the direction of the arrows 11, 12 through the calibration loop and then in the direction of the arrows 13, 14. Two valves 15, 16 are provided and are initially closed to enable the passage 17 to be drained before the calibration sphere is inserted through an opening 18. The opening 18 is closed by a plug 19 and a stop 27 ensures that the sphere is positioned in the passage 17. The passage 17 is then filled with fluid, the valve 16 is opened and the sphere is guided by bars 24 and a ramp 22 into the calibration loop. After its travel through the loop, the sphere is stopped by a buffer 20. On opening the valve 15, a hinged arm 26 guides the sphere back into the passage 17. The valves may be manually or power operated.
