Abstract

1,201,311. Separating liquids; analysing beryllium for copper traces; contacting liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 8 April, 1968 ,[14 April, 1967], No. 17329/67. Headings BID, B1F and B1X. An aqueous liquid and an organic solvent, of different densities and electrical conductivities, are mixed together in glass container 1 and allowed to separate by settling, after which the heavier liquid is drained off through rubber tube 14 until the interface passes probes 12, whereupon the change in resistance between the probes causes a solenoid-operated pinch valve to close the tube. The control circuit (Fig. 2, not shown) can be set so that the valve closes in response to an increase or decrease in resistance. The valve is spring-loaded towards the closed position and the current through probes 2 is automatically cut off when the valve closes. The lighter liquid is drawn off through adjustable tube 6. In liquid contacting, an aqueous solution of Cu, Ni or Cr is admitted through tube 3 and an ion-extracting solution of chloroform containing sodium diethyldithiocarbamate is added through tube 4, and the liquids are mixed by stirrer 18 and allowed to settle out. In analysing beryllium for traces (5 p.p.m.) of copper, the metal is dissolved in HC1 to form a solution to which buffer solution is added to bring the pH to 4.5. The mixture is contacted with chloroform containing sodium diethyldithiocarbamate as described above, further volumes of the organic phase being added and the mixing and settling repeated after draining off the first quantity. The various volumes of organic phase are mixed together and their copper content is measured by spectrophotometry.
