Abstract

1,201,205. Cable drums. J. HILL. 24 Oct., 1968 [25 July, 1967], No. 24292/67. Heading B8M. A cable, wire or rope drum of the kind comprising either a barrel 10 and a pair of end flanges 19 forming part of a supporting structure for the barrel 10 between which the barrel is rotatable relative to the flanges, or a barrel and a pair of end flanges forming a unitary structure and a pair of spaced wheels constituting the supporting structure between which the unitary structure is rotatable relative to the support, is characterized in that a motor 24 or like prime mover is mounted on the supporting structure for driving transmission means in operative engagement with the barrel or the unitary structure so as to effect rotation of the barrel or unitary structure relative to the support. The motor 24 is pivotable on the stationary flange 19, in the embodiment of Fig. 1, and moves a pinion 22 between an inoperative position and an operative position in which it meshes either with a rack 21 internally of the barrel 10 or with a rack 28 externally of the central shaft 12 of the drum.
