Abstract

120,114. Wellman, Seaver, & Head, and Smith, F. G. Nov. 12, 1917. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In a steel-melting furnace or mixer, a movable port structure is provided with a double liquid seal consisting of an inner trough capable of being raised within the outer trough to make the seal, or lowered to break it. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the inner trough B is made with an air space so as to float on the liquid in the outer trough A. The seal is broken by drawing off liquid from the outer trough, and re-made by introducing more liquid. Instead of making the inner trough buoyant, it may be connected to counterbalancing weights, and it may be raised and lowered by mechanical means.
