Abstract

1,201,147. Road vehicle suspensions. BRITISH TRAILER CO. Ltd. 1 Dec., 1967 [3 Dec., 1966], No. 54226/66. Heading B7D. A motor vehicle or semi-trailer has two laterally-in-line pairs of rear wheels 12, 13 carried on respective axles 14, 15 mounted for pivotal movement about a longitudinal horizontal axis, and a pair of auxiliary wheels 21 carried on an axle 20 disposed forwardly of the wheels 12, 13, the axles 14, 15, 20 having interconnected fluid mountings which provide load sharing between the axles. Each axle is suspended by leaf springs 16A, 16B connected at their forward ends to a post 22 formed with pistons 23, 24 slidable in cylinders 25. The respective upper and lower cylinders 25 are connected by hydraulic pipes 26 one of which is closed during braking by a valve 27. Means 29 permit the auxiliary wheels 21 a castoring acting which may be prevented when reversing, or the auxiliary wheel may be positively steered in dependence on the angular movement between a semi-trailer and a tractor vehicle.
