Abstract

1,200,644. Paper; woven and non-woven fabrics. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 1 Sept., 1967 [2 Sept., 1966], No. 40107/67. Headings D1P, D1R and D2B. [Also in Division C6] Fibrous material is strengthened by treating it with an amine oxide of the formula: where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represent the same or different substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl, cycloalkyl, arylalkyl or heterocyclic groups or one of them represtnts such a group and the other two taken together with the N atom from a heterocyclic ring. The fibrous material may be woven or non-woven fabric, including paper or felt, containing a substantial proportion of fibre soluble or swellable in the amine oxide, including wood pulp, cotton, linen, wool, fur, nylon, rayon, polyester and mixtures of these. In Examples 6 and 7, the sheets treated are of paper composed of bleached sulphite pulp with an addition of 15% of polyethylene terephthalate fibres (Example 6) or 25% rayon fibres (Example 7). Specified oxides are N-methylmorpholine -N-oxide, N- methylpiperidine -N-oxide, N-methylpyrolidone -N-oxide, N-methylazacycloheptane -N- oxide, nicotine -1-oxide and triethyl-amine-N- oxide, either as a liquid or in a solution in a volatile solvent such as water, methanol, acetonitrile, methanol-dioxane, methanol-acetone or mixtures, which may then be evaporated, or in a liquid non-volatile solvent such as dimethyl sulphoxide, N-methylpyrolidone, sulpholane or a mixture. The fabric and imbibed amine oxide are heated so that the fibres swell and fuse together. The amine oxide and non- volatile solvent may then be washed out of the fabric with water, aqueous acid or base, or organic solvents such as methanol or acetone, and the fabric dried.
