Abstract
1,200,614. Polyolefin compositions. CHEMTREE CORP. 28 Sept., 1967 [30 Sept., 1966], No. 44167/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G6] Radiation shielding, in particular shielding with high efficiency in removing neutrons and also shielding providing for degradation of neutrons and attenuation of gamma radiation resulting from neutron capture, comprises one or more elements of atomic number 57 to 71 (rare earth elements) or compounds of these elements homogeneously dispersed in a polyolefin binder. The binder may in particular be linear (high density) polyethylene. In specific examples, 2 vols. dysprosium, l vol. dysprosium and 1 vol. gadolinium, 1 vol. dysprosium oxide, 1 vol. gadolinium tungstate, and 1 vol. gadolinium or dysprosium hydride, respectively, are dispersed in 1 vol. polyethylene, and 3 vols. dysprosium and 1 vol. gadolinium are dispersed in 2 vols. polyethylene, on a roll mill, the polyethylene being heated to a dough consistency. The product is moulded into a desired shape and cooled.
