Abstract
1,200,103. Electrolytic production of alkali metal. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb.27, 1968 [March 31, 1967], No.14782/67. Heading C7B. An alkali metal is produced electrolytically by passing an electrolyzing current from an anode in contact with a fused metal halide salt comprising ions of the alkali metal to be produced and no other monovalent cations to a molten cathode formed of the alkali metal which is to be produced, the molten salt and alkali metal cathode being separated by a polycrystalline ceramic material permeable only to monovalent cations, and removing alkali metal liberated at the cathode. If the metal to be produced is sodium the fused salt analyte may be a mixture of the chlorides of sodium and aluminium. The diaphragm, which may be cylindrical or planar, e.g. consisting of a plurality of rectangular sheets of crystalline material held in a supporting framework. The halide, e.g. chlorine, produced may be recovered as such, or a hydrocarbon or partially halogenated hydrocarbon may be fed into the anode compartment to react with the halogen produced to form a halogenated hydrocarbon. The apparatus shown, e.g. for electrolysis of sodium chloride, comprises a cell formed by steel casings 14 and 15, the space there between being filled with heat insulating brickwork 16, and a compartment 5 containing liquid alkali metal which forms the cathode and which is separated from the anode compartment 1 by a diaphragm 4 of #-alumina. The anode compartment is defined by a side wall 2, and a heating medium, e.g. hot air, may be passed through the space formed between the side wall 2 and the steel casing 14. Anodes 9 suspended on current leads 10 are surrounded by chlorine collecting domes of nickel 11, provided with outlet pipes 12. Sodium produced is withdrawn via outlet 22. In a further embodiment thereof Fig. 2, (not shown) the cathode 5 extends upwards within a cylindrical #-alumina diaphragm (29) and the anodes are formed by a plurality of graphite rods arranged in a ring about the diaphragm (29). Laboratory scale apparatus Fig. 4 comprises an outer glass container 34, a #-alumina crucible 36 having cemented to the rim thereof a ceramic tube 36. Cathode 43 and anode 45 are provided within and outside the crucible respectively. In operation a stream of nitrogen 48 passes down the cathode current lead and out through the holes 29 above the surface of the molten alkali metal 42.
