Abstract

The opacity of a gas is measured by passing it through a venturi b and measuring the transmissivity through diametrically opposed apertures in the region of the venturi constriction. Light from a bulb 7 is passed through the apertures via an aperture in a diaphragm 9, a filter 10, and a half silvered mirror 3, and its intensity may be measured by a light-sensitive cell at 1 or may be reflected back from a mirror at 1 to a cell 4 by way of the mirror 3. Light diverted by mirror 3 on to a further cell 12 may be used to compensate for variations in the source or alternatively a constant light source may be used. Apertures 14 in the housing to the venturi apertures allow for an inflow of air to keep the passages dust free. The measuring of exhaust gases from diesel engines is referred to.
