Abstract

In a modification of the centrifuge described in the patent specification, Fig. 1, the means 18, 19 for intermittently generating a change in the pressure or flow in the indicating pipe 13 is independently connected to a chamber 14 to which the indicating pipe 13 and the duct 16 are both connected. In operation, a gas is supplied through the duct 16 at a sufficient pressure, indicated by the sensing means 17, to prevent the liquid being pumped by the paring disc 15 through the duct in the reverse direction. When sludge clogs the opening of the pipe 13 the liquid, intermittently supplied by means 19 through the duct 18, which opens within, or radially inwardly of, the liquid in the chamber 14, causes a radially inwards displacement of the liquid level in the chamber 14 and the pressure in the pipe 13 and in the duct 16 rises. The rise in pressure in the duct 16 is indicated by the sensing means 17 and when it reaches a predetermined value a sludge discharge is effected manually or automatically. In another modification, Fig. 2, the centrifuge rotor operates completely filled with liquid. Air is continuously supplied, through a duct 16 and at a pressure indicated by means 17, to a chamber 20 which is completely filled with liquid. A duct 21, in which means 22 for generating pressure or flow changes is inserted, and the duct 12, for the discharge of separated liquid, are hermetically connected to the centrifuge rotor by means of seals 23, 24. In operation, the means 22, e.g. a periodically opening valve, intermittently lets liquid and air out of the chamber 20. When the opening of the pipe 13 in the sludge space is clogged, a reduced liquid flow occurs in the pipe 13 and the duct 21 when the valve 22 opens. The means 17 then indicates a pressure reduction and when this reduction is sufficiently large sludge discharge is effected.
