Abstract

1,199,115. Producing sheath/core; conjugate; polyester filaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968]. No. 13988/68. Heading B5B. The core of a sheath/core, conjugate, polyester filament consists of (a) a fibre-forming, linear polyester or copolyester based on a "simple glycol", or of a fibre-forming, linear copolyester in the molecular chain of which there are, in addition to units based on a "simple glycol", poly(alkylene oxide)-containing units in a proportion such as would result from the reaction with the copolyester-forming precursor or precursors of less than 5 parts, (preferably no more than 3 parts) by weight of poly(alkylene oxide) per 100 parts by weight of the final copolyester. The sheath of the conjugate filament consists of (b) a fibre-forming copolyester, or a fibre-forming "admixed copolyester" having structural units containing poly(alkylene oxide) radicals the proportion of these units being such as would result from the reaction with the copolyester-forming precursor or precursors of not less than 5 parts and not greater than 60 parts (preferably not greater than 40 parts) by weight of poly(alkylene oxide) of average molecular weight at least 500, (preferably not less than 1000 and not greater than 20,000) per 100 parts by weight of the final copolyester or copolyester admixture. The conjugate filament is formed by melt-spinning and oriented by cold drawing. The term "simple glycol" is defined as meaning a glycol which is not a polyglycol and includes more than one simple glycol. Examples of simple glycols are those having the general formula HO(CH 2 ) n OH, wherein n is 2 to 10, and 1: 4-(hydroxymethyl cyclohexane). The term "admixed copolyester" is defined as meaning a mixture containing a copolyester a proportion of the structural units of which contain poly(alkylene oxide) radicals; the term includes mixtures of more than one copolyester containing the above structural units. The core material may have terephthalate linkages and the sheath may consist of a co-polyester, or may have as a constituent a co-polyester, based on terephthalate units. The terephthalate may be ethylene or tetramethylene terephthalate. The poly(alkylene oxide) may be poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(propylene oxide). The sheath component of the conjugate filament may occupy 5 to 40% (preferably 7 to 33%) of the cross-sectional area of the filament.
