Abstract

1,198,079. Weld nuts. G.K.N. BOLTS & NUTS Ltd. 8 Aug., 1968 [28 June, 1967], No. 29715/67. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] A weld nut comprises a base portion 10 having welding projections 12, an internally threaded bore 15, a sleeve 13 defining a surface 14 for engagement by a welding electrode and locking means at the upper end of the sleeve for gripping an applied screw. The nut is secured to a workpiece by passing a current through the electrode engaging the surface 14 and an electrode below the workpiece, pressure being applied by the electrodes. The nut has three projections 12 positioned at alternate corners of its hexagonal base. The locking feature is provided by positioning the sleeve 13 between two relatively movable die members, each die member having a pair of flat, inclined die surfaces. The die members deform the upper portion of the sleeve into an elliptical cross-section.
