Abstract

1,197,968. Automatic voltage control. B. STEFANOV. Dec.12, 1967, No. 56455/67. Heading G3R. In a power supply circuit of the type including a regulator providing a stabilized D. C. output derived from the voltage on a storage capacitor, the capacitor is charged from a series of narrow pulses derived from an A. C. supply by way of a switch which is rendered conductive, for a predetermined time in each half cycle of the A. C. input voltage, by a control pulse occurring in the rising portion of the input sine wave half cycle, the position of the control pulse relative to the said rising portion being determined by the regulator output voltage and the A. C. input voltage, so that when the switch closes the capacitor is charged to a voltage only slightly greater than the regulated D. C. output voltage, thereby minimizing heat dissipation in the regulator. As shown, a storage capacitor C1 is charged from A. C. terminals 13a, 13b, by way of a switch 10, constituted by transistors Q1, Q2, associated with diodes D1, D2 so arranged as to permit the control of alternating current, a transformer T1 and diodes D3, D4, and the voltage on the capacitor C1 is applied to a conventional regulator 12, e.g. of the series type, which provides a stabilized D.C. output voltage on terminals 14a, 14b. A voltage representative of the D.C. output voltage is derived from a voltage divider 34, 35 and is applied to the base of a transistor Q4 which is associated with a further transistor Q3 to the base of which is applied a voltage which is representative of the A. C. input voltage and which is derived from the terminals 13a, 13b by way of a transformer T2 and diodes D5, D6. Transistors Q4, Q3 form a comparator circuit the output from which is applied, by way of further circuitry including transistors Q5, Q6, Q7, and Q8, to render the switch 10 conductive for a predetermined time interval during the rising portion of each A. C. input half cycle, the resulting current pulses being applied over transformer T1 and diodes D3, D4, to charge the capacitor C1. Thus, if the input voltage is high relative to the output voltage, the current pulse occurs early in the input half-cycle, and vice-versa; this results in the capacitor C1 being charged to a voltage only slightly greater than the D.C. output voltage so that the transformer T1 may be smaller than that normally required, and the losses in regulator 12 are minimized.
