Abstract

1,197,912. Automatic voltage control. HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd. July 17, 1967, No.32826/67. Heading G3R. A direct voltage stabilizer comprises a series transistor 1 connected with its collector on the output side and having a base drive from an amplifier 2 responsive to output voltage variations, as detected by a circuit including a voltage divider 3 and a reference Zener diode 4, there being connected in a parallel channel across the collector emitter path of the transistor 1 a voltage breakdown device 6, e.g. a Zener diode. The diode 6 will conduct only when the difference between input and output voltages exceeds its breakdown voltage; this condition obtains when the circuit is first switched on, thus enabling the amplifier 2 initially to apply bias to transistor 1, whereby the output voltage is established; there-after the said difference will be less than the breakdown voltage of the diode 6 which will then be non- conductive. A current limiting resistor 7 may be provided, and as shown in Fig.4, the diode 6 may be connected to the junction between a resistor 9 and a Zener diode 8 connected across the input terminals, the arrangement then being such as to ensure that the voltage applied to the diode 6 during normal operation is less than the sum of the output voltage and the breakdown voltage of the diode 6 so that the diode 6 will not conduct even if the input voltage should rise to a level greater than the said sum.
