Abstract
1,197,850. Marine propellers. J. G. SATTERTHWAITE and J. B. MACY. 3 Dec., 1968, No. 57363/68. Heading B7V. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A marine propulsion or pipeline pumping system, e.g. for a tug, comprises a propeller 21 in an annular rim 22 supported by water-lubricated rubber or rubber-like bearings 33, 34 in a nozzle 18, a flange 27 secured to rim 22 being engaged by radial faces of bearings 33, 34 and being provided with gear teeth 29 engaged by a driving pinion 59, or by a toothed drive belt, Fig. 12 (not shown). Teeth 29 are of rubber and pinion 59 of stainless steel, or vice versa, water lubrication of the teeth and bearings 33, 34 being provided by annular water jacket 66 supplied with clean water under pressure. In the main propulsion form shown, nozzle 18 is mounted in a stern recess 16 and drive shaft 52 operates through forward and reverse gear trains 56, 62 with clutches 57, 63. Access panel 67 is removed to remove the segments of flange 27, propeller 21 then being removable from nozzle 18. The front and rear portions of nozzle 18 may be of rubber. Fig. 9 (not shown). Two contra-rotating propellers may be mounted in coaxial nozzles in a common assembly, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown). The propeller system may be used as a bow or stern thruster, Figs. 1 and 12 (not shown). Rudders may be disposed forward and astern of the nozzle when used for main propulsion, Fig. 1 (not shown). The bearings 33, 34 each comprise a plurality of segments with radial and axial water channels, Fig. 5 (not shown) (see Division F2].
