Abstract
1,197,547. Vehicle wheel and tyre assemblies. DOW CORNING CORP. 26 Feb., 1969 [19 July, 1968], No. 10343/69. Heading B7C. In a wheel and tyre assembly the tyre comprises a toroidal-shaped body 15, Fig. 5, of voidcontaining elastomeric material reinforced with at least one coil-wound layer 16, Fig. 2, of reinforcing cord over the external surface, a tread portion 24 of elastomeric material laid over the radially outer periphery of the coilwound body, and the rim comprises two portions each having a tyre-engaging flange 18. 19 at its radially outer periphery, the outer diameter of the rim portions being larger than the internal diameter of the tyre and means for attaching the rim portions to each other to compress the body axially and secure it to the rim. The tyre further comprises, under the tread, a belt 17 of reinforcing cord or tape, either pre-wound or wound in situ and one or more rigid reinforcing rings 14 in the interior of the body to maintain uniform internal circumference of the body. The or each layer 16 may be of a single strand or a tape of several cords, which may be preimpregnated with rubber. In manufacture, the body is moulded from a quantity of uncured, unblown, heat curable elastomeric foam filter stock containing a heat activatable blowing agent, using the mould, Fig. 1 (not shown), with the reinforcing ring positioned therein. The body, which may be partly or fully cured, is coil-wound, the belt 17 pressed into position thereon and the tread and sidewalls moulded on to the body and cured in a mould, Fig. 4 (not shown).
