Abstract

1,197,476. Measuring viscosity, electrically. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. Oct. 22, 1968 [Oct. 27, 1967], No. 49034/67. Heading G1N. The viscosity of an oil is measured by measuring the electric current consumption of an electric motor having a cylindrically surfaced rotor 15 rotating within a concentric cylindrical inner surface of a stator 11 while continuously passing the oil through the annular gap 21 between the rotor and stator via ports 17 aligned with the annular gap. The motor may be a three phase A.C. induction motor. Any axial passages in the rotor may be filled or left open. Ports 23 are provided for inserting temperature and pressure measuring means (not shown). Preferably the temperature and pressure are controlled. A stroboscopic disc 24 is observable through a transparent window 25 to permit measurement of the rotor speed.
