Abstract

1,197,468. Batteries. ALKALINE BATTERIES Ltd. 24 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43855/67. Heading H1B. An electric battery particularly one using alkali hydroxide electrolyte has at least one electrode comprising active material, in the form of a self-supporting sheet, which is reinforced with a sheet of textile material, pressed into contact with but not secured to, a conducting sheet through which electrode connection to the battery is made. The electrodes of opposite polarity may be assembled in a flat stack, Fig. 1, or wound in a spiral, Fig. 2, or bent to-and-fro in a zig-zag form (Fig. 3, not shown). In an embodiment, the active materials nickel and cadmium hydroxide which may include graphite or nickel powder are mixed to a paste with a cellulosic binding agent and applied to both sides of a loosely woven nylon tape, dried and then calendered. A complete electrode plate may be made by forming a sandwich 11 and 13 of the pasted strip of the same polarity on both sides of metal strip 12, preferably of nickel-plated steel or pure nickel and provided with lugs or projections for electrical connection to the electrode, the said sandwich being separated from another 15, 16, 17 of opposite polarity by separator material 14. A further separator strip 18 is placed on top. The assembly may then be wound into a spiral and bent into a zig-zag form.
