Abstract

1,196,553. Rotary shaft seals. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 28 April, 1969 [7 March, 1968], No. 11273/68. Heading F2B. A bearing and sealing arrangement for a rotatable shaft 11 comprises a bearing disposed between two axially-spaced shaft seals 21, 24, means for applying barrier fluid, e.g. grease, to the space 40 between the seals, and means for detecting change in the barrier fluid pressure due to any leakage of the fluid past the seals. The bearing comprises ball bearings 12, 13 housed in a member 14a and spaced by a spacer 16 having a radial duct 16a. The seals 21, 24 are each formed by two sealing rings 21a, 21b and 24a, 24b and a backing ring 21c and 24c and the seal 24 is housed in a member 14b sealed to the member 14a by 0-rings 19. The duct 16a communicates with the space 40 and, via a duct 35, with a duct 36 containing a volume reducing member 36a and closed by a pressure transducer head 37. A venting duct 39 meets the duct 36 and is closed by a bleeder valve 38. Before use, the valve 38 is opened and grease is supplied to the space 40 through a nipple 42 and duct 41 until excess grease flows from the valve 38 which is then shut, the supply of grease being continued until the pressure in the space 40 reaches a predetermined value which is higher than that on the outer sides of seals 21 and 24. The transducer senses the grease pressure via gas trapped in duct 36 and in use, any leakage is detected by a fall in pressure. Leakage past the seal 21 may be collected in a catchpot 43; a similar catchpot may be provided behind the seal 24. In one application (not shown), the shaft 11 operates a valve used in transferring nuclear fuel elements, the arrangement then preventing leakage between radioactive gas and atmosphere.
