Abstract

1,196,435. Fuse-cords. TROJAN POWDER CO. 26 June, 1967, No. 29375/67. Heading F3A. A flexible fuse-cord having sufficient sensitivity to conduct a detonating wave or deflagration therethrough comprises a wrapper enclosing a cracked and discontinuous column of solid explosive, the column being composed of irregularly shaped mating particles justapositioned so as to correspond to a continuous column of explosive, at least 50% by number of the particles being less than <SP>1</SP>/ 32 inch in diameter. 50% of the particles also pass through a 35- mesh screen, and at least 25% pass through a 120-mesh screen. The explosive is cast pentolite, TNT, amatol, sodatol, composition B, cyclonite, tetryl, cyclotol; extruded and hardened nitrostarch and nitrocellulose; and combinations of tetranitrodiglycerine with nitrocellulose and nitromannite with trimethylolethanelrinitrate. The hardness of the latter can be reduced with dinitrotoluene. The wrapper is formed from extruded plastics or folded sheet material with a longitudinal lapped seam. The sheet material comprises paper bonded by glue and wax; polyvinylchloride; polyethylene; co-polymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate; cellulose acetate; glassine; cloth; and aluminium foil. The wrapper is encircled with filaments of glass fibre; nylon, rayon, polyvinylchloride, polyesters and polyacrylonitriles. In a method and apparatus for making the fuse-cord, a semisolid explosive composition is extruded through a nozzle 4 drawing a sheet 2 of wrapping material along with it. The sheet 2 is folded about the column in a sleeve 3 and the column is consolidated under the pressure extrusion to eliminate gas-filled voids therein. The column is brought to a solid continuous condition by ageing, curing, heating or cooling in a water sleeve 8. Cracking of the column is effected by rollers 60, 61 and 62, 63. The wrapper is sealed by the application of a wax coating and bonding composition supplied through nozzles 40, 41 and by passage through heated belts 45. If a molten explosive is used to form the column it is fed via a hopper and screw feed into a tubular wrapper preformed about a nozzle through which the explosive emerges.
