Abstract
1,195,971. Applying adhesive tape. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. Ltd. 22 June, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 12663/66. Heading B8F. In an apparatus in which the free end of an adhesive tape 24 is applied to an article travelling in the direction of the arrow A (Fig. 1) and the applicator 2 is subsequently retracted, the tape is cut before the whole of the required length has been applied to the article, and the tape is first fed by a driven roller 8 and subsequently further tape is pulled out by the movement of the article with the roller 8 free wheeling. In the form illustrated the feed roller 8 positions the end of the tape on a suction pad 3 which is moved together with a. roller 2 to apply the end of the tape to the article. In an alternative construction (Fig. 2, not shown) the suction pad (45) is stationary. During the movement of the roller 2 against the article the tape is held so that its end draws partly back from the pad 3. During the retracting movement of the roller 2 the feed roller 8 is driven by a toothed connection 10 to the lever 6 moving the roller 2 and pad 3. The tape is cut by a guillotine 14 controlled either by a microswitch operated by the article or by a photo-electric device controlled by markings on the tape, and is smoothed on to the article by rollers 12, 16. Tape may be drawn from the supply 1 upstream of the feed roller 8 either by a capstan reel or by rollers (42) (Fig. 2, not shown) over which the tape passes.
