Abstract

1,195,902. Halogenating polyesters; halogenated polyester resins. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 19 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 23349/67. Headings C3P and C3R. Halogenated, flame-retardant polyesters are made by reacting certain unsaturated polyesters with chlorine, bromine, hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide. The polyesters are made by incorporating into the polyesterification mixture, one or more of (1) a low molecular weight mono-olefinic dicarboxylic acid and at least one of dicyclopentadiene, dimethyldicyclopentadiene, pentadiene, or a 5-lower alkylidene (2.2.1) bicyclohept-2-ene; (2) carbic, methylcarbic or tetrahydrophthalic acids or one of their anhydrides or (3) 2-butene-1,4-diol, 2-butyne-1,4- diol, 3 - cyclohexene - 1,1 - dimethanol, or allyl alcohol. Four methods for making the polyester, prior to halogenation, are described; (1) the "carbic" method in which the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid is reacted with the diene before the polyol is added; (2) the "beginning" method which comprises reacting the unsaturated acid, the diene and the polyol, in one step; (3) the "half-ester" method in which the unsaturated acid and the polyol are reacted before adding the diene and (4) the "end" method in which the unsaturated acid is polyesterified with the polyol, before adding the diene. In the examples, polyesters are prepared from (i) maleic anhydride, ethylene glycol, and dicyclopentadiene, (ii) maleic anhydride, propylene glycol and dicyclopentadiene, (iii) maleic anhydride, propylene glycol and carbic anhydride, (iv) maleic anhydride, ethylene glycol and carbic anhydride, (v) maleic anhydride, carbic anhydride, propylene glycol and ethylene glycol, (vi) maleic anhydride, dicyclopentadiene, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, and (vii) maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and ethylene glycol. Those polyesters containing unsaturation may be mixed with a vinyl monomer (e.g. styrene) and the mixture copolymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.
