Abstract

1,195,848. Grass cutting machines. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. 19 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967], No. 34554/67. Heading A1F. [Also in Division B3] A rotary cutting cylinder, e.g. for cutting grass, is produced by spacing at least three spiders 20; Fig. 4, along a shaft 30, twisting each of a plurality of spring strip blades 10 into a permanent helical form, and securing the blades to outer projections 23 formed on the spiders 20, the projections 23 being formed with surfaces 24 inclined such that the corresponding portions of the associated blades 10 lie at least substantially in contact with them, and the blades 10 being orientated so that their outer major surfaces lie substantially on their cylindrical surface of revolution. Preferably, the blades 10 are of EN44 spring steel, optionally chromium plated and heat treated, and the spiders 20 may be of malleable cast iron or aluminium. Alternatively, Fig. 10, a spider 50 having individual arms may be employed.
