Shuttleless looms; smallware looms; vertical looms.-In a loom for weaving a number of tapes &c. in which the weft threads A from spools are inserted in loop form into parallel vertical sheds, formed in the warps F by longitudinally-actuated thread-guiding bars or wires R, by eyed needles C, which may be secured to a bar E disposed in front of the sheds and carried and actuated by suitable mechanism, the weft loops A' are secured to form a fast selvedge by knitting or crocheting needles. These needles, such as H, may be secured to a bar G at the back only of the sheds, the bar being actuated to cause the needles to engage each loop of weft and draw it through the previously-formed loop, which is then released. In the form shown, an extra thread J controlled by a guide K is employed with each needle H and is lapped around the needle so as to form loops J<1> thereon, the weft loop being temporarily held by the needle H and then delivered over the latch at the same time as the thread J is drawn through the loop J<1>, so that the weft loop is secured by the crocheted pillar L. Corresponding needles M, threads N, and guides P may be provided at the other selvedge to make the selvedges uniform. The needles C may be hollow and in some cases be actuated to carry their threads around the needles H. The wefts are beaten up by a reed D.
