Abstract

1,195,395. Filter beds. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 7 July, 1967 [8 July, 1966], No. 31354/67. Heading BID. A gravity filter bed 17 is supplied with water to be filtered from a conduit 1 through valve 4 and up over adjustable weir 7, down passage 11 and through or round perforate baffles 13, 14 which cause it to flow evenly and smoothly into the filter chamber, along a ccmplete side wall thereof and on a level with the top of bed 17. Units comprising the walls of several passages 11 and baffles 13, 14 are prefabricated and mounted along one wall of the chamber. A number of beds may be supplied by one conduit 1, from a pump, and weirs 7 are adjusted to equalise their respective flows. Any sand displaced into space 18 during backwashing is returned to the bed by restoration of forward flow. Perforate baffle 9 smooths the flow upstream of weir 7.
