Abstract

1,195,327. Electric resistance elements. O. HEIDE. 18 Sept., 1968, No. 44407/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] A device for heating the heads of ingot moulds or the risers of casting moulds to provide a supply of molten metal to compensate for shrinkage comprises a tubular feeding jacket 38 for fixing in the head or riser, a ceramic or ceramic lined hood 39 on top of the jacket and an electrical resistance element 14 which projects into the hood 39 and is supported by a contact ring 19 which is divided into insulated sections to supply electric current to element 14. The element may be in the form of a carbon or graphite cylinder split longitudinally to provide two legs which are supplied by semi-circular water-cooled insulated sections of the contact ring. If a three-phase supply is provided the ring is composed of three arcuate sections and the cylinder is split to provide three legs. Alternatively the element may comprise a graphite cylinder closed at one end and a central coaxial core extending into the cylinder from the closed end. The contact ring comprises two vertically spaced and insulated ring sections, one of which embraces the cylinder and the other the core. Heat is radiated to the metal in jacket 38 from a graphite or carbon plate 41 coated on its underside with ceramic 42. Recesses 46 in jacket walls 38 allow the walls of the jacket to heat metal. The temperature of metal in the jacket may be sensed by a thermocouple which controls the supply to the heating element. The walls of the jacket or the packing around the jacket may be made of exothermal material so that it ignites and initially heats the molten metal. The walls of the jacket may be coated material which becomes detached during the electric heating and forms a protective layer on the surface of the melt to prevent it cooling too rapidly. Alternatively the coating may be used to introduce alloy elements into the melt or to produce a gas atmosphere in the jacket. The contact ring and/or the hood may be pivotally mounted to remove the heating element from the riser or head.
