A gas-cooled nuclear reactor includes means for introducing into fuel-containing channels of the reactor via a coolant inlet, a non-combustion-supporting gas-filled aqueous high expansion foam. The gas filling may be CO 2 . The foam can comprise 800 parts gas to each part of water by volume, so that the water is widely dispersed and gives rise neither to thermal shock nor to disturbance of the neutron physics of the core. The foam has a better heat transfer ability than the gas alone by a factor of fifteen, and serves to remove decay heat from the fuel whilst the coolant is at atmospheric pressure as a result of a leakage. The apparatus used may comprise a foam generator and a foam duct leading into an inlet plenum, or spray means for the foam solution and a wire mesh positioned in a coolant inlet to receive the foam solution and disposed where a gas circulator will cause a draught through the mesh sufficient to generate foam from the solution and convey it to the desired region.
