Abstract

1,194,597. Matrix displays. UNIVERSAL TELEWRITERS .(PTY) Ltd. 27 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 43992/67. Heading G5C. The elements of a matrix display comprise laminar shutters 7, contained in individual cells having windows 2, and they are moved into one of two stable positions by electrical means which induce translational forces directly in the shutters. As described these forces may be electrostatic, ferromagnetic or produced by A.C. eddy currents. Bistability is achieved by ramping the cell floor at 15, Fig. 8, or by hinging the shutters to a pivot (9, Fig. 5, not shown). In Fig. 7 the cells are scanned columnwise by a moving carriage bearing electromagnets 13; or the framework 11 itself may move. In Fig. 8, the shutters are actuated by an array of crossing, magnetic-force-inducing conductors O, S and R; thus energization of conductor R<SP>1</SP> will cause chutter 7 to be raised (to clear ramp 15) while energization of conductor C 1 O or C 1 5 will cause shutter 7 to open or occlude window 2, respectively.
