Abstract

1,193,412. Light-sensitive aqueous copolymer dispersions. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 18 Jan., 1968 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 2716/68. Heading C3P. An aqueous copolymer dispersion is obtained by copolymerizing (1) at least one light-sensitive monomer of the formula in which m is 1 or 2, R 1 is a methyl or phenyl group and, if m is 1, R 2 is -OCH 2 .COOCH = in which groups R 3 is a C 1-10 alkyl group, with (2) at least one other comonomer which is a vinyl ester or acrylic or methacrylic ester, in the presence of (3) a polymerization catalyst and a light sensitive non-ionic emulsifier of formula where R is a methyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl group, and n is 1 to 200. A further monomer, e.g. styrene, acrylonitrile, acrylic, methacrylic, vinyl sulphonic and vinyl phosphonic acids and further emulsifiers and/or protective colloids may also be present. The copolymers are cross-linked by light, the emulsifier being cross-linked simultaneously. Suitable components (2) specified are the vinyl esters of acetylphenoxyacetic, benzoylphenoxy-acetic, acetophenone carboxylic and benzophenone carboxylic acids. In the Examples, the copolymerization of vinyl acetate, vinyl esters of C 9-11 branched acids, the sodium salt of vinyl sulphonic acid and either p-benzoylphenoxy acetic acid vinyl ester or the acrylic acid ester of p-hydroxy-benzophenone, in the presence of various hydroxyethylation products (of nonyl phenol, of polypropylene oxide, and of p-hydroxybenzophenone (two specified)), poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, sodium acetate, and potassium persulphate, the latter in two portions, is described.
