Abstract

1,193,382. Seismic prospecting. MARATHON OIL CO. 12 Feb., 1968 [11 Feb., 1967], No. 6872/68. Heading H4D. In a system for detecting inhomogeneities in the earth by reflection of acoustic energy, an energy field having a predetermined spatial pattern is radiated from within a borehole and echo signals are sensed by a detector in the borehole and insensitive to energy with that pattern, whereby the detector discriminates against directly-received energy and responds to echoes and other waves not having the predetermined pattern. The field is generated by energizing four barium titanate cylinder segments 47, or a transducer assembly similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,193,381 (see Division H4), with signals of selected amplitude and phase for propagating shear or compressional waves (either as pulses or with varying frequency) in the earth. Similar transducers 46 receive echoes of these waves and their electrical outputs are combined such that received waves with the same spatial pattern as the transmitted waves give no nett output. Thus if the earth formations are symmetrical about the borehole zero nett output is obtained, but inhomogeneities (i.e. asymmetry) modify the field pattern and result in a nett output. The receiving transducer outputs may be recorded individually for later addition by computer. In a modification, acoustic shear wave energy is generated by the impact of a moving mass against a stationary mass contacting the borehole wall, the impact being tangential to the borehole wall.
