Abstract
119,331. Kaye, S. Nov. 13, 1917. Brick-laying machines.-A brick-laying machine comprises a vehicle 1 mounted on rails, a turntable 3, a telescopic pillar 4 operated hydraulically, a horizontal extensible frame 32, a travelling carriage 40, and conveyer chains for feeding and laying the bricks. The turntable 3 is rotated as required by a, motor 5 and worm gearing. The bricks are placed in compartments in a receptacle 6 which can be turned intermittingly by a stop 25 on a chain 21 to bring the compartments successively over a ram 11 operated from the motor 5. The bricks 15 are then released by a bottom plate being automatically swung open by a stop, and are fed forward one by one by the reciprocating ram. When all the compartments are empty, the receptacle 6 is replaced by a full receptacle. The bricks are thus fed to a conveyer chain 30, the slack of which is taken up by a weighted wheel 34. The chain consists of double links and pivoted or hinged plates 37 which remain horizontal and carry the bricks up and along the frame 32. whence they are transferred by spring arms 48 and a drop plate 49 to the laying-chains 45. These chains pass over rollers 46 which are carried by a frame swivelling in a pivoted ring 41 so that the chains can be retained in the same vertical plane as the frame 32 is swung round and extended. The spindle of the rollers 46 carries a star wheel 52 actuating a trip lever 53 which in turn operates the drop plate 49. As the plate drops, the spring arms 48 are separated by the cone 55 and bricks 57, 58 are gripped between the arms 48 and flanges 50 of the plate 49 and are thus removed downwards from the pivoted plates 37 and lowered to gripping-plates 59 on the laying-chains; a cone 60 causes the arms 48 to open and release the bricks, and a spring 61 restores the plate 49 to its upper position. To compensate for the variation in the angle between the vertical planes of the chains 45, 30, the bricks are turned, as they are transferred, by giving a partial rotation to the plate 49 by means of a collar 66 carried by a yoke 67 and sliding on a spiral web 65 of a rod 64 fixed to the distance piece 63. The collar normally slides on the rod 64, and the yoke 67 and plate 49 merely drop; if the chains are angularly disposed, the piece 63 brings i the spiral web 65 into action, and the collar 66 is turned in its descent. The lower ends of the chains 45 pass under wheels 47 having plungers 68, the tapered ends of which engage pins 71 to displace the plungers and eject the bricks. The mortar is led by fiexible pipes from a tank 73 to a vessel 74, whence it passes through pipes 75, 76 to form layers on the bricks already laid. The laying-apparatus is guided by telescopic rods engaging the wall.
