Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A method of making, by injection moulding, an article of footwear having a reinforcing toe cap, e.g. of steel, includes the step of releasably supporting the toecap in a mould cavity defined between a last and an outer mould so that the toe cap is prevented from moving in the mould during the injection moulding. In a first embodiment (Fig, 1) the toe cap 25 is held on the last 14 by a spring loaded ball catch 27 which engages an aperture 33 in a cross-piece 30 of the toe cap 25. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3) the toe cap 25 is held in position by a magnet 37 and by a pin 36 in the sole plate 35. In a third embodiment (Fig. 4) the toe cap 25 is held on the last 14 by interengaging projections 38, 39 and is further positioned by pins 41, 42. The top pin 42 has a bearing surface 43 above the last 14 to provide a gap 44 between the toe cap 25 and last 14.
