Abstract
1,192,819. Hot tops; treating castings. MANNESMANN A.G. 19 Dec., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 57489/67. Heading B3F. In order that an ingot may be stripped from its mould for air-cooling and yet retain top insulation, heat-insulating panels 2 are mounted in the mould to form a hot top at a selected height and each panel includes a steel plate 6 at its outer face with either the plates 6 extending below the panels 2 as shown or metal studs 7 extending from the plates, or both, so as to become welded to the ingot. The hot top thus remains on the ingot during stripping, aircooling, re-heating and, finally, rolling. Each panel 2 has secured to it a suspensory strip 3 with a line of apertures for hanging the panel on a rod 4 laid across the mould top, the selection of aperture depending on the ingot weight required. Corner pieces (5) hold the panels 2 in position. The mould is stripped, while the ingot still has a fluid core, and after cooling, the ingot, with hot top, is brought to rolling temperature in a soaking pit.
