Abstract

1,192,281. Heat-treating aluminium and its alloys. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. Jan. 11, 1968 [Jan. 23, 1967], No. 1630/68. Headings C7A and C7N. High strength aluminium base alloys are prepared by working, e.g. rolling, drawing or swaging, an alloy containing 0À05 to 1À0% each of Fe and Si, at least one selected from 0 to 10% Mg, 0 to 3% Mn, 0 to 1% Cu, 0 to 0À5% each of Cr, Zn, Zr, Ti and 0 to 0À1% B, balance Al and impurities (total less than 1À5%) at not more than 450‹ F. with a total reduction in excess of 20%, holding the alloy at 250-650‹ F. for a time of at least one second and either no greater than defined in the formula: - T(8À95 + log e t) = 5, 700, wherein T is temperature in degrees Kelvin and t is the maximum time in minutes or such that there is no recrystallization throughout the matrix, and repeating the working step, preferably repeating the working and holding steps, which may be combined e. g. by rolling at 250-450‹ F., a plurality of times. Prior to working e.g. cold rolling, the alloy may be homogenized or solutionized either after or during casting above 850‹ F. for at least 4 hours. Examples of holding temperatures and maximum times determined by the formula are: 400 hours at 300‹ F, 16 hours at 400‹ F. and 2 minutes at 650‹ F.
