Abstract

1,192,099. Cams. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 16 Sept., 1968, No. 43888/68. Heading F2K. [Also in Division F1] To maintain line contact between a cam 38 on an overhead cam-shaft 26 in an I.C. engine and a rocker arm 11 a self-adjusting slipper 37 is mounted on the arm 11 and has a cylindrical surface 44 contacting the arm to allow the slipper to move around the arm. As shown, the arm is formed with an integral sleeve 29 mounting it on a rod 28 and has a bifurcated free end to operate a pair of valves (12), Fig. 1 (not shown). The slipper 37 is maintained on the arm by a spring clip 47. Again, Fig. 7 (not shown), the slipper is formed with a convex cylindrical surface (54) received in a concave cylindrical surface (56) in the arm. A spring clip (58), Fig. 8 (not shown), retains the slipper on the arm 11 and includes two spring arms (59) extending above the arm 11 and in shoulders (61) on the slipper, and a single spring arm (62) extending under the rocker arm. A pair of side spring arms (63) extend behind mechanically adjustable tappets (33<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 6 (not shown), to retain the slipper axially, indentations (64) on the arms (63) engaging knurled nuts (66) on the tappets to retain the setting of the tappets.
