Abstract

1,192,096. Oxide bodies; metallic oxides. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 13 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 7582/68. Headings C1A, C1J and C1N. Oxide bodies are made by dewatering a hydrous oxide sol to form a gel, heating the gel to decompose it to the oxide but not to sinter it, forming the oxide into a green body and sintering the green body at 1700-1900‹ C. Suitable sols are those of the oxides of thorium, cerium, titanium, hafnium, zirconium and aluminium and are stabilized by adding a solution of a thermally decomposable salt of magnesium, calcium or yttrium to the oxide sol. A solution of yttrium nitrate is added to a sol containing 500 gm. of colloidal thoria per litre of water to incorporate 5-15 mole per cent of yttria in the product. Water is removed by heating at 100‹ C. and the glassy gel formed is decomposed at 950‹ C. The oxide formed is ball-milled in carbon tetrachloride and the milled powder dried at 50‹ C. and formed into a tube by isostatic pressing at 30,000 lbs per square inch. The formed tube is sintered at 1700‹ C. for 2 hours, fully oxidized in air at 1400‹ C. for 4 hours and then reduced by heating at 1000‹ C. for 4 hours in hydrogen saturated with water vapour at room temperature. When alumina is used the alumina gel is decomposed by heating at 1100‹ C.
