Heading A5E..'[Also in Division C2] Herbicidal compositions comprise as active ingredients substituted semicarbazide derivatives of a general formula: in which Y denotes hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine or a nitro, methoxy or carboxyethyl radical or an alkyl radical having one to three carbon atoms or a hydroxy or cyano radical or a phenoxy radical which may be substituted by chlorine or the trifluoromethyl radical or a phenyl or methylsulfonyl radical, n is one of the integers 1, 2 or 3, X denotes hydrogen or an aliphatic radical having two to four .carbon atoms which may be substituted by chlorine or a cyano radical or a methoxy, or hydroxy radical or the radical of acetic acid, R denotes hydrogen or an alkyl radical having one to three carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> denotes hydrogen or a methyl or ethyl radical and R<SP>3</SP> denotes hydrogen or a methyl or ethyl radical, together with a solid or liquid carrier. The composition may be used' as solutions, emulsions, suspensions or dusts. Many carriers are specified.
