Abstract

1,191,833. Continuous casting moulds. CONSOLIDUS Ltd. 31 July, 1967 [2 Aug., 1966], No. 34689/66. Heading B3F. A continuous casting mould is made by butt welding together the longitudinal seams 13 between margins of one or more members that forms or form a polygonal cross-section tube 11, the seams being located between and spaced from two adjacent corners to avoid distortion and thermal stress problems at the corners. In examples described, the polygonal tube may be formed from a single formed plate 10 with a single seam weld 13; from a pair of channel members (22) (Fig. 2, not shown) welded together along their edges to produce two seam welds (23); from a pair of channels (32) (Fig. 3, not shown) with intervening plates (33) necessitating four seam welds (34); and from four angle members (46) (Fig. 4, not shown) and four intervening plates (43), (44) necessitating eight seam welds (45). The members are made from a high thermally conductive metal, e.g. copper, and the polygonal tube 11 is supported in a rigid water jacket 16 having cooling passages 17.
