Abstract
1,191,721. Screw mixers. COLGATE PALMOLIVE CO. 19 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 18010/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions B5 and C5] An apparatus for incorporating gas into a detergent mix making use of shearing and smearing actions and, subsequently extruding a bar comprises three cylindrical barrels 13, 27 and 46 fitted with rotating worms 12, 28 and 47, the pitch of the first worm 12 varying along its length, two zones 26 and 44 connected to a suitable supply of gas through pipes 67 and 68 having pressure-regulating valves 69 and 71 respectively, three sets of' perforated plates connected to rotating knives and situated at the exit end of each barrel, propellors 36 and 51, and a final exit mouth consisting of a tapered annular space 53, situated between a central conical spreader 54 and a heated nozzle 56. Heat control jackets are attached to each barrel, to the nozzle 56 and to the die 57; the plate 52 is also heated. Guiding chutes 72 and 73 are mounted alongside the respective rotating knives. Another form of apparatus uses companion sets of dual worms, the worms of each set rotating in opposite directions so that both worms of each set are moving downward in the central part of each barrel. If atmospheric pressure is to be used in either zone 26 or zone 44 then there is no need to use a closed chamber or zone.
