Abstract

1,191,520. Mass spectrometers. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 27 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58721/67. Heading H1D. An adjustable slit for a mass spectrometer comprises a circular diaphragm 1 containing a central circular aperture 2 and supporting a fixed rectangular blade 3, the diaphragm also supporting a pair of bearings (not shown) for a pivot rod 6 which carries a second rectangular blade 7. The blades have bevelled edges which are accurately parallel to each other and to a diameter of the aperture 2, and in the position shown the edges overlap by 5 microns. When the rod 6 is rotated the slit is opened to a width determined by the angle of rotation. The parts are preferably made of stainless steel so that the device may be heated to 250‹ C. for out-gassing.
